Reconstruction Continues in Iraq

The following reconstruction information combines September’s completed, ongoing and started Iraq Reconstruction projects from the Project and Contracting Office, the Gulf Region Division, and the U.S. Agency for International Development.

COMPLETED: October 1-15: 

Dahuk

A school renovation project that consisted of interior renovations, bathroom upgrades, and playground.

Ninewa

A gas turbine rehabilitation. The project included rehabilitation and repair of five gas turbines that were damaged due to using contaminated diesel fuel. Current work also includes training plant workers to operate the turbines, using the correct fuel in turbine operations, and performing required turbine maintenance. Presently, all five units are operational.

Eighteen teachers and 519 students face a brighter future and a better education in two renovated schools in Ninewa Province.

Diyala

Completion of a village water distribution network in Diyala Province will provide water to 365 houses.

A project to design and construct water networks in five areas and a sewage network and pumping station in one area.  The new water distribution system now provides water to an additional 30,520 people and the new sewer system added an additional 6,800 people to the sewer system. 

Baghdad

An Iraqi company completed a police station.  The completed station will increase the security level and provide a welcomed police presence in this section of Baghdad

A repair and maintenance project on a major Baghdad road.

A project to upgrade security at an Iraqi government building.

A new 33kV underground feeder to replace 3.5km of 33kV underground cable will make the electrical system more reliable for local residents in part of Baghdad Province.

Babil

A new substation project that included the design and construction of a switch-gear building and guard house, installation of two transformers, and switch-gear equipment.  This substation replaces an existing facility for increased reliability.  Approximately 80,000 people are positively affected by this change.

Kerbala

Three hundered students will have a better learning environment in a newly-renovated school in Kerbala Province. The project upgraded a ten-classroom school with a new electrical system, paint, colored tile walkway, new plumbing and tile for bathrooms, and a new security wall.

Najaf

More that 300 students will enjoy a better learning environment in a newly-refurbished school.  This project refurbished an existing school to include new electrical work, paint, tile floors, bathrooms, and a new security wall. 

Qadisiyah

The 1080 students of three villages in Qadisiyah will attend classes in three renovated schools.   This project included an addition of new 5x7m classrooms and a courtyard perimeter wall to two schools, and new 5x7m classrooms and one 5x7m toilet room to the other school. 

Missan

Residents are safer in Maysan Province after construction of a vehicle checkpoint consisting of two blast-protected, vehicle inspection pads; two security buildings, and concrete perimeter walls.  These improvements will increase security by controlling traffic flow through town and providing a secure area for police to inspect vehicles for weapons and explosives.

Dhi Qar

Almost 700 Iraqi school children will receive a better education in two newly-refurbished schools. These projects improved the existing structures as part of the mud school replacement program.

Iraqis are safer after completion of a new Anti Crime Police Station. This project included the renovation of perimeter security to include increased wall height, concertina wire, vehicle and personnel gates, guard towers, and increased lighting.  Additional items included fresh plaster/paint, new roof tiles, potable water tanks, replaced wiring, and complete renovation of the existing sanitation system.  These improvements will provide the local police officers a renovated and updated facility.

Basrah

A fire station project that included the rehabilitation of the old fire station building.  There are now 21 new office facilities, two restrooms, and a covered parking garage.  This project increased fire safety and will also provide a new training facility for the firemen.

A newly-constructed border fort along the border between Iraq and Kuwait increases security for the people of Basrah Province.  This new construction project included a bed down area, kitchen, armory, observation posts, perimeter security lighting, berm, offices, showers, and electrical power.  This project will increase border security, will allow for proper training of the border police, and provide additional logistical support for border patrols.

A road repair project that upgraded over three kilomteters of an existing dirt road with a six meter-wide, two-lane, paved roadway with shoulders in a congested neighborhood.  Five culverts were also added to assist the local farmers with irrigation.  The local community of 25,000 will benefit from this safer, paved roadway for travel to school and other community services.

Erbil

A project to upgrade the existing power distribution system and provide new equipment as needed.

Sulaymaniyah

A new border post in Sulaymaniyah Province.  The post will provide a staging area for the Iraqi Border Patrol to launch patrols to better control the Iraqi-Iranian border. 

An Iraqi company started renovations on a police station.  This work consists of general renovation of the facility and completion of force protection work.

Tameem

Three school renovation projects will provide a better education and brighter future for 1200 students. Work consists of the construction of six new classrooms and four new bathrooms in each school.

Salah Al Din

A substation feeder project. This project consists of installing overhead feeder lines. 

Diyala

A school renovation project.  This project consists of providing labor, material, and equipment to renovate classrooms.  Renovation of this 12-classroom school will create a better learning environment for 770 students.

Al Anbar

A project to construct, maintain, and perform periodic message replacement on 21 billboards.  Scope includes the site preparation and installation of billboards.

Baghdad

Students at one Baghdad school will have a safer place to learn after the completion of the recently-started guard post at their school. 

An Iraqi company started a road improvement project in Baghdad.

A project to install eight kilometers of pipe to eliminate sewage from the streets.

A project to construct a 7200-square-foot metal roof structure to provide shelter for water distribution operation.

A building generator project to provide reliable electrical connectivity and circuit testing for a government building. 

A road repair project on a major Baghdad road.

A school rehabilitation project will provide a better educational environment for approximately 300 school-aged children, grades K thru 6.

A project to construct supply sewer sinks.  Project consists of purchasing, installing, and supplying sufficient spare parts to sustain operational readiness.  Purpose is to provide the local area with 25 submersible pumps. 

Two school renovation projects

A project will supply materials and labor to rehabilitate various residential, electrical distribution networks. 

Construction on the combat arms branch school to be used as a combat training complex for the Iraqi Army.  The complex will be a fenced facility consisting of a headquarters, branch school, student and staff billeting, laundry, dining area and kitchen, cold and dry goods storage, armory, central issuing, training equipment storage, guard towers, guard shack, vehicle maintenance area, and a fueling station. 

A project to provide all materials, equipment, and labor for two 100KW pump generators to power four turbine pump motors that supply water from the Tigris River to 200 families.  Project will include construction of concrete pads for the generators, fuel tanks sized to allow generator operation for one week, a pad and containment for each fuel tank, a covered shelter for each generator, a two-meter-high security fence, and all associated wiring to connect generators with the pump motors. 

Babil

A project to construct a new school consisting of 14 classrooms, one office, and three toilet rooms.  This new school will provide a better learning environment for 300 students.

Najaf

A project to rehabilitate an existing 33kV/11kV substation and to construct the addition of a new control building, switchgear, and transformers.

Qadisiyah

 

An Iraqi company started construction on the 8th Div Iraqi Army barracks.  This project is to construct a new two-story, 320-bed military-type barracks.  This facility will provide much-needed living accommodations to the divisional soldiers.

A school renovation project that includes an addition of two new 5x7m classrooms and a courtyard perimeter wall to an existing nine-room school building.  The additional classroom space will create a better learning environment for 400 students.

Missan

A project to rehabilitate, extend, and rebuild an existing 33/11kV electrical substation and its associated control building.

A project to rehabilitate an existing 33kV/11kV electrical substation and to construct the addition of a new control building, switchgear, and transformers.

Dhi Qar

A project to rebuild a law enforcement firing range.

Muthanna

Construction started on seven checkpoint projects along the Iraqi-Saudi Arabian border. Four Iraqi contractors have the contracts, with approximately 25 to 30 Iraqi workers employed daily at each site.  The projects include HESCO (sand-filled) walls, guard towers, generators, security lighting, vehicle search areas, bathrooms, septic systems, and water.  These checkpoints will provide increased security for Iraq.

Basrah

An Iraqi company had started construction on a 300mm water main. This project is to install 2,000 meters of new water mains, two valve chambers, and two fire hydrants.  This will provide water for 134,000 people.
